Maria Sharapova announced her retirement not long ago and during a WTT event in San Diego, she made her 1st public appearance after announcing it.
Her 1st public appearance after announcing retirement was as part of a WTT event. She was chosen as the coach for the WTT Celebrity All-Star match. The inaugural match was held at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
After the event, she was grabbed by WTT's Daniela Hantuchova for an exclusive interview. She said:
"I’ve been part of World TeamTennis ever since I was a little girl. It was really the event that gave me the experience that I needed at that age. I remember, leaving WTT, I went on to win a smaller WTA event and it was the beginning of my career. I’ve played World TeamTennis on this court, so good memories to be back here."
She wasn't asked about her retirement mostly out of courtesy and no player's like to speak about that topic. They usually announce it and close the chapter there. That is even more true for Sharapova who was forced to retire because of injuries.
