Tennis
player Dragos Nicolae Madaras provisionally suspended for match-fixing
At just 26
years old, Swedish tennis player Dragos Nicolae Madaras, once seen as a rising
star in the sport, has encountered a significant setback in his career.
Although he reached a career-high ranking of World No. 200 in July 2023, he
currently sits at World No. 222.
Madaras is
positioned as the third-highest-ranked Swedish tennis player in the
ATP
Rankings, only surpassed by the Ymer brothers, Mikael and Elias Ymer. However,
he could be considered the second-highest-ranked now that Mikael has announced
his retirement following a suspension due to multiple missed doping tests.
This time,
Madaras has faced a provisional suspension imposed by the Tennis
Anti-Corruption Program, a measure that has shaken his future in the sport.
The
International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) made this decision due to alleged
violations of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP). The suspension took
effect on August 17, 2023, and prohibits Madaras from participating in any
tennis events under the jurisdiction of tennis authorities or attending such
events.
The
suspension is based on Section F.3.b.i.1. of the TACP, which pertains to
Madaras's failure to comply with a specific demand. Despite this sanction, the
player filed an appeal in an attempt to have the decision reconsidered.
However, an
Independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer, after a thorough review, dismissed
Madaras's appeal on September 22, 2023.
In the
current situation, Madaras will have to serve this provisional suspension until
all the details of the case are clarified. It is important to note that in
previous cases, some players have received lifetime bans after being involved
in match-fixing scandals.
Examples of
such bans include tennis players Nastja Kolar and Alexandra Riley, who received
permanent sanctions in the sport after being found guilty of manipulating match
results in their respective careers.
