Carlos Alcaraz had a very brief stint as an entertainer of the crowds at Arthur Ashe after progressing to the second round of the
US Open, as he paid homage to Colombian singer Sebastian Yatra who was in the stands.
Defending US Open champion Alcaraz made it through his first round at the 2023 New York major. The Spaniard won the first set 6-3 before his opponent Dominik Keopfer retired at 2-3 in the second set.
After the match, Alcaraz took to social media to wish his opponent a speedy recovery.
"Get well soon @DominikKoepfer! No one likes to win like this, but felt great tonight returning to a court that is so special to me!" he wrote.
Alcaraz entertains crowd with Yatra song
Despite the sadness around Keopfer's retirement, Alcaraz was still able to entertain the crowd during his on-court interview after the match. The singer was in attendance and the 20-year-old expressed his joy at being watched by the star.
"it's great to have [him] here of course supporting the tennis, supporting me as well." he said.
At the interviewer's request, Alcaraz then burst into one of Yatra's songs, Vagabundo, which was released this year. The song has 74 million views on YouTube and over 122 million streams on Spotify.
Yatra was among the stars who appeared at last week's Stars of the Open, an exhibition event held at Flushing Meadows a few days before the start of the Slam to raise money for the relief effort in Ukraine.
Yatra and the rest of the crowd were delighted with Alcaraz's rendition of the song, and a video of the moment was posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, with the caption:
"Carlos Alcaraz can carry a tune. He gives his best @SebastianYatra impression."
Alcaraz will face
Lloyd Harris in the next round as he carries on his bid to defend his US Open title.
