Kei Nishikori has been missing from the ATP circuit since the 2019 US Open, as the Japanese superstar underwent a minor procedure on his elbow which has kept him out of action.
The 2014 US Open runner-up looked set to return at the recently concluded
Davis Cup qualifiers. He was prepared to lead Japan in their tie against Ecuador but
withdrew just days before the event.
Having struggled with fitness since the elbow operation, Nishikori seems to be edging closer to making his much-anticipated return.
"My elbow is fine but my body is not ready yet." Nishikori said in a recent interview. "I’ve rested a long time and I’m coming back from zero. It’s sad, seeing the Australian Open and now skipping the Davis Cup, and other big tournaments are coming. Everything is going well but I couldn’t make it in time.
I’m sure I will come back soon, hopefully in Miami this month or for the clay-court season, although it wasn’t possible this week [for the Davis Cup]”.
