Wimbledon 2024 will once again observe the 11 PM curfew this year. The third Grand Slam of the year will begin on Monday, and players from all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and
secure the ultimate prize. This year’s competition will once again observe the 11 PM curfew
rule, meaning that no matter how big the match is or who is playing it,
the contest will be suspended for the rest of the evening.
The rule has been in place since 2009 when the organisers managed to have a rooftop installed on the centre court. The official statement
regarding the playing condition stated: “The 11pm curfew is a Planning
Condition applied to balance the consideration of the local residents with the
scale of an international tennis event that takes place in a residential area.
The challenge of transport connectivity and getting visitors home safely is
also a key consideration.”
In the past, there have been occasions when the matches ended in darkness to finish on the same day. The mega-event, which is considered the most prestigious one in the tennis calendar, has been organized every year since 1877. This year, it will be the 137th
edition of the competition.
Switzerland’s legendary tennis star and the former world
number one Roger Federer is the most successful player in the history of the
competition in men’s tennis in the singles category after lifting the title
eight times.
In the women’s singles category, former world number one Martina
Navratilova remains the most successful as she lifted the title nine times. This
year, in the men’s singles category, Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz will be defending his
crown.
He lifted the title last year after beating the former world number one
Novak Djokovic in the final in a five-set thriller with a score of 1–6,
7–6(8–6), 6–1, 3–6, 6–4. In the women’s singles category, Marketa Vondrousova
will be defending her title as she defeated Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the final
last year in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
