America’s young tennis star Coco Gauff has revealed why most of Team USA’s contingent moved to a hotel during the Paris Olympics. The 2024 mega-event officially began on Friday, where thousands of athletes worldwide are participating to secure ultimate glory for their respective countries.
Gauff is currently part of the Team USA and was also the flagbearer of the contingent in the opening ceremony along with basketball star LeBron James. The 20-year-old, who is already regarded as one of the best tennis players in the women’s singles category, in a post on her official account on the social media platform Instagram, revealed the reason behind why majority of athletes moved out of Olympic village. “10 girls, two bathrooms #olympicvillage,” she wrote. “Well, it's only 5 girls now so I have the room alone. roommates are very chill. I love it.”
Gauff is competing in two different categories at the Olympics. In the singles category, she will face Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in the first-round clash on Sunday. In the doubles category, she and her partner Jessica Pegula booked their place in the second round after beating Daria Saville and Ellen Perez in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-1. Gauff is going through a mixed season. She started on the back of an impressive US Open triumph, where she lifted the title in 2023 after beating world number two Aryna Sabalenka in the final with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
However, this season has not been the way Gauff would have liked. In the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, she was knocked out after losing in the semifinal to Sabalenka in straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4. At the French Open, Gauff’s journey ended in the semifinal as she lost to world number one Iga Swiatek in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4. At Wimbledon recently, Gauff lost in the fourth round to Emma Navarro in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
