The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix Stuttgart will take place between 15-21 April and Monday sees the main draw starting albeit with only four matches with the main action starting in earnest on Tuesday. As a result, there is only three singles ties with two main ones on the Centre Court.
With the schedule confirmed, our preview takes a look at the matches on offer and how the winners stack up in terms of who they will face. The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is a staple of the clay court calendar and sees action move to the indoor courts of Stuttgart.
Starting proceedings on Monday will be Diana Shnaider taking on Paula Badosa, with the former coming through qualifying to take her spot in the main draw. A first time champion on the WTA Tour this year, Shnaider continues to rise up the rankings. Compared to some of the players who did qualify for the tournament, it is a tough opener for Badosa. This though kind of sums up the Spaniard's comeback with confidence boosting wins followed by some sort of roadblock unfortunately. The winner will face Aryna Sabalenka in the second round.
A repeat potentially for Badosa of her tie with her at the last tournament they played at the Miami Open. It was fraught by Sabalenka having just lost her ex-boyfriend, Konstantin Koltsov. Badosa is her best friend off court and so there was an emotional embrace at the net. If they do repeat their tie, it will likely also be a very warm and cordial affair. But Sabalenka will know her opponent tomorrow.
Also another aspect to note with Shnaider and Badosa is that they have played twice sharing the meetings. But Badosa was left in tears and retired during their last meeting in Hua Hin earlier this season.
The other Main Draw tie on Centre Court is the Elena Rybakina awaiting pair with Veronika Kudermetova set to face Barbora Krejcikova. A tough tie for the Kazakh albeit two players without a lot of form. Krejcikova in particular has dealt with health issues as of late. Kudermetova leads their head to head record 2-1 and it is one of the leading standout first rounds.
Kudermetova is 6-9 for the season and Krejcikova 5-3 albeit the latter hasn't played too much outside of early hard court tournaments. Aliaksandra Sasnovich v Sachia Vickery is a battle of the qualifiers on Court 1 with the winner facing Coco Gauff in the second round. A minimal smattering of action. But a day with repercussions for the rest of the tournament.
