Doubles World No. 2 Taylor Townsend stunned the tennis world today with the announcement that she has split with longtime coach John Williams, according to Black Spin Global. The decision comes on the heels of arguably the best year of the American’s career, a season in which she secured her second Grand Slam title, reached the summit of the doubles rankings, and delivered several standout performances in singles competition.
The partnership dates back to 2015, when Williams joined Townsend's team as a strength and conditioning guide. At the time, the former junior No. 1 was an 18-year-old talent seeking consistency on the tour after recently breaking into the top 100 in singles. Over the decade that followed, Williams evolved into a central figure in Townsend’s camp, transitioning into the role of mental and performance coach.
The dynamic of their professional relationship shifted dramatically in 2021, shortly after Townsend discovered she was pregnant. In past interviews, Williams revealed the unique conversation that took place when Townsend sought his guidance for that chapter of her life, noting that her dedication to training remained absolute even as she approached her due date.
“She finds out that she’s pregnant. She comes to me and says, ‘Listen I need you to help me navigate this.’ And I laughed and I was like, ‘You are not going to be playing tennis at eight months.’ So she said, ‘No, the entire pregnancy.' ... She was in the gym still three days a week. We were training. It looked hilarious but she was there and we were still training.”
Following her return to the tour, Townsend made the unorthodox decision to promote Williams to the head coaching role, despite his lack of a traditional tennis playing background. It was a gamble that Townsend felt was necessary to unlock her full potential, prioritizing his analytical mind over technical convention.
“‘I’d like you to coach me.’ And I’m laughing and joking and I’m like, ‘I’ve been coaching you for years. What are you talking about?’ She’s like, ‘No, I want you to be my tennis coach.’ And I said, ‘You do realize I don’t play tennis, right?'” To this, Townsend’s response was, “‘Yeah, that’s why I want you to coach me, because the things that you’ve taught me, the questions you’ve asked me… nobody’s ever done those things before.'”

A season of dominance

Townsend enjoyed a spectacular season on the tour, particularly in doubles following her association with Katerina Siniakova. The multi-time Grand Slam champion from the Czech Republic proved to be the ideal partner for Townsend to take the next step. Together, they captured the 2024 Wimbledon title and followed it up with a victory at the 2025 Australian Open. The pair also reached the final of the US Open, though they ultimately fell to the team of Gabriela Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe.
In total, Townsend won four doubles titles this year and reached the World No. 1 ranking for the first time in her career, briefly displacing Siniakova.
Although her reign at the top lasted only a few weeks—Siniakova eventually reclaimed the spot before the year ended, leaving Townsend at No. 2—the duo’s dominance was undeniable. They were officially named the “Best Doubles Team of the Year” by WTA fans. “The people have spoken, they know who has the most motion. Shoutout to everyone who voted us @wta 'Doubles Team of the Year' award @siniakovakaterina.”
Beyond the doubles court, Townsend produced a remarkable performance in singles at the US Open. She eliminated the 25th seed Jelena Ostapenko and subsequently the 5th seed Mirra Andreeva en route to the Round of 16. There, she faced two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova in one of the matches of the year. In a dramatic finish, the Czech star saved an astounding eight match points before finally securing a 1-6, 7-6 (13), 6-3 victory.
