Ashleigh Barty endured a rough comeback to tennis in the previous round where she saved match points to go through but against Ostapenko there was none of that.
Ostapenko came into this match in strong form demolishing opponents in rounds one and two so Barty came out focused. She shook off some of the rust in the previous round and she played well from the start. After the match she said as much:
"Today felt like I was a lot sharper and switched on and ready to go from the very first point"
Speaking about the plan going into the match she said:
"The goal today was to try to bring the tennis back to my kind of tempo and my kind of rhythm as often as possible and as quickly as possible in points."
That was something she could not do often in the previous match which made it really tough for her. In this match, she was able to do it simply be because she was much better prepared. On her opponent she said after the match:
"She obviously has the ability to take that away from you quite quickly, particularly off serve and first shot and off her returns. So it was about being patient at times and making sure we tried our best to neutralize and then bring the game back in our favor."
The defending champion put forward a strong effort and she moves on to R4 looking much better after two matches played.
