A new WTA star is born: 16-year-old Kristina Liutova completes miracle run to first title

The WTA may have found its next teenage sensation. Sixteen-year-old Russian Kristina Liutova completed one of the most remarkable breakthrough weeks of the season by winning the WTA 250 title in Memphis, becoming the youngest player to lift a WTA trophy since Coco Gauff in 2019.
Ranked No. 229 in the world and forced to come through qualifying just to enter the main draw, Liutova defeated Czech player Darja Vidmanova 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the final to claim her first tour-level title in her very first WTA main-draw appearance. The victory also made her the first player born in the 2010s to win a WTA tournament.
The teenager’s triumph was not simply a story of youth, but of resilience. After losing the opening set 6-1 and finding herself tied 1-1 in the second, Liutova completely transformed the match, winning nine consecutive games before taking control of the decider and eventually sealing the title on her fourth match point.
When the final forehand winner landed, Liutova dropped to her knees before running to the stands to embrace her mother in tears, a fitting ending to what she had already described earlier in the week as a “miracle journey.”
A breakthrough week that echoes Coco Gauff’s rise
Liutova’s title run was filled with impressive victories that suggest this was more than a one-week surprise. She opened the tournament by upsetting top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in a match that ended with the higher-ranked Russian retiring due to heat illness while Liutova was leading. She then defeated Australian Maya Joint before knocking off sixth seed Caty McNally in straight sets.
Her semifinal victory over Elvina Kalieva secured a place in the final and made her the youngest player to reach a WTA final since Gauff’s run in Linz in 2019. The comparison is impossible to ignore. Gauff won that title at 15 and used it as the launchpad for a career that has already produced multiple Grand Slam trophies and the world No. 1 ranking.
Liutova is still at the very beginning of her journey, but the scale of her rise is extraordinary. She began the 2026 season ranked No. 714 in the world and entered Memphis outside the top 200. Her projected ranking after the tournament is No. 126, a jump of nearly 600 places in a single season.
Liutova’s rise is remarkable not only because of the title, but also because of where it places her among the next generation of stars. The Russian teenager is now projected to become the highest-ranked player under 18 on the WTA Tour.
For perspective, she is three years younger than Mirra Andreeva and Victoria Mboko, and two years younger than Iva Jovic and Lilli Tagger, currently the two youngest players inside the WTA top 100.
