Jessica Pegula comfortably defeated Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-1 in her debut at the WTA 500 Adelaide International, securing her spot in the quarterfinals. The American showcased her strong form as she returned to the 2025 season and now awaits the winner of the match between Paula Badosa (No. 12) and Ashlyn Krueger (No. 54).
The Greek player had initially lost in the qualifiers to Peyton Stearns but entered the main draw as a Lucky Loser following last-minute withdrawals. She had a solid first-round victory over Linda Noskova.
The first set started in Sakkari's favour, as she capitalised on Pegula’s lack of rhythm to secure an early break and a 2-0 lead. However, Pegula quickly took control, improving her serve and exploiting Sakkari’s numerous unforced errors to win five consecutive games, including three breaks. Although Sakkari managed to recover one break, it wasn’t enough, and Pegula closed the set 6-4.
The World No. 7 carried her momentum into the second set, dominating early with two quick breaks to lead 4-0. Sakkari defended her serve just once and had a couple of break opportunities but never looked comfortable against Pegula, who delivered an impressive performance despite her extended absence from competition.
Pegula ended the match with a 61% first-serve percentage, winning 61% of those points, along with 56% on her second serve. The American sealed the 6-4, 6-1 victory, advancing to the quarterfinals to face either Badosa or Krueger.
