Ajla Tomljanovic continued her impressive return to on-court action as she won the WTA 125 event MundoTenis Open title in Florianopolis, Brazil.
The 30-year-old, who played in three quarterfinals of the Grand Slam events, never won a WTA title before and therefore the triumph would’ve meant a lot. It was Tomljanovic’s first title after lifting an ITF title 10 years ago.
Tomljanovic, who recently made a comeback after spending months on the sidelines because of a knee injury, defeated Argentina’s Martina Capurro Taborda in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 7-5.
Tomljanovic will be hoping that the recent success will help her in moving towards her ultimate objective which would be to win a bigger and more famous event at the highest level.
The best outing for the Zagreb-born in a Grand Slam came in the last two years when she played in the quarterfinal at Wimbledon and US Open but on all three occasions, she failed to deliver a knockout punch.
In 2021, Tomljanovic was defeated by former world number one Ashleigh Barty in the quarterfinal at Wimbledon. A year later, she lost to Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the last-eight clash. Last year in the US Open, Tomljanovic lost to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinal with a score of 6-3, 7-6.
