On Sunday night, the
Davis Cup Finals were completed as superb Jannik Sinner come to the fore and took victory for Italy for the second time and the first title in 47 years.
But while Martina Navratilova was full of praise for the team, it did raise a good point of debate which is about the tennis off-season and lack there of.
In the tie, Matteo Arnaldi defeated Alexei Popyrin 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 to give Italy the lead before Jannik Sinner then saw off Alex de Minaur. He dominated the Aussie 6-3, 6-0 to hand Italy the title.
Navratilova laments lack of break for ATP stars
But it ends the season basically in December for a lot of players and while the WTA has been ended a month, the ATP with the Finals in Turin and now albeit ITF in the form of Davis Cup means players will get only just under a week or two break before they start preparing for United Cup.
Also a lot of players are involved in exhibitions in Saudi Arabia over Christmas meaning that in reality, it doesn't stop at all and Navratilova believes there needs to be more of a tennis off-season and lamented her frustrations on Sunday evening.
"Congrats to Italy for winning #DavisCup, but seriously- this tennis calendar is insanely long! Been a problem for decades and if anything it’s getting worse. Tennis needs an offseason that’s longer than what we have now…hello????," she wrote.
