American women’s tennis players have again become dominant in the latest
WTA rankings. Over the years, players from America,
especially in the singles category, have had a significant stature in
the history of women’s tennis. From the likes of Chris Evert to Serena Willaims
to Lindsay Devenport, a host of American players have done
wonders on the court in women’s tennis.
Their glory days have returned, as five American players now feature in the top 15 of the WTA rankings. It is the first time in 20 years that five American players feature in the top 15 of the WTA rankings. Those include the likes of
Coco Gauff who is currently ranked second in the
world, number six ranked
Jessica Pegula, number nine ranked
Danielle Collins,
number 14 ranked Madison Keys and number 15 ranked
Emma Navarro.
Five American players were featured in the women’s top-15 rankings about two decades back, including Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati, and Chanda Rubin. Perhaps Collins is having the best season out of the five, as she won some notable tournaments.
The 30-year-old, who earlier announced that she would retire
from professional tennis at the end of the 2024 season, won the Miami Open
after beating Elena Rybakina in the final with a score of 7-5, 6-3. She then
lifted the Charleston Open after defeating Daria Kasatkina in straight sets with
a score of 6-2, 6-1.
Gauff, the highest-ranked out of all those players, has yet to play in the final of any event this year. Her best appearances have
been playing in the semifinals of different events. She played in the semifinal
of the Australian Open and lost to world number three Aryna Sabalenka in
straight sets with a score of 7-6, 6-4. She then lost in the last four clash of
the French Open to current world number one Iga Swiatek in straight sets with a
score of 6-2, 6-4.
