The 2020 BNP Paribas Open decided to give out 11 Wild Cards to native American players as American tennis is undergoing a renaissance.
In tennis, Wild Card recipients usually tend to be home players that are worthy of the honour or superstar players that are currently returning from injury. In this case, it's the former one as the tournament decided to give out 11 wild cards to native American Players. It's nothing unusual but the number is quite high. One thing to remember is that the BNP Paris Open is a
128 player tournament in both the ATP and WTA. So a total of 11 American Wild Card recipient out of 256 players is understandable.
Notable wild card recipients in the ATP side of the tournament include
Tennys Sandgren and
Jack Sock. Lesser-known recipients into the main draw are 18-year old American up and comer Brandon Nakashima, SoCal native Marcos Giron and Mitchell Krueger.
On the WTA side of the tournament, notable wild card recipients include Caty Mcnally, Kirstie Ahn, Christina McHale, Shelby Rogers, Madison Brengle and Usue Arconada. The final 12th wild card went to another North American albeit a Canadian one. 17-year old Leylah Fernandez is slowly bursting onto the scene and this wild card will only help in that endeavour.
Qualifying wild cards recipients include Michael Mmoh, J.J. Wolf, Thai-Son Kwiatkowski and Govind Nanda in the Men's draw. For the women's draw, they are Nicole Gibbs, Whitney Osuigwe, Caroline Dolehide, Hailey Baptiste. The BNP Paribas Open 2020 is shaping up to be a really good tournament especially with these Wild Card recipients.
