The 2021 WTA
Serbia Open held in Belgrade will be the first WTA event ever held in Serbia and it should feature a surprise participant.
The news is not official but Serbian media are reporting that the 2021 WTA Serbian Open held in Belgrade from May 17th to May 23rd will feature a surprise attendee, none other than
Ana Ivanovic. The former world number one is officially retired since 2016 but now it appears she will return to tennis.
It is not yet known whether she will take part in some sort of charity match or exhibition match but Serbia Open director Djordje Djokovic confirmed the news while making an appearance at a local morning show. Asked about the upcoming event he expressed delight at hosting a WTA event in Belgrade underlining his intention to bring all Serbian tennis ambassadors to the event.
Asked whether he meant Ana Ivanovic as well he replied with 'Yes'. The news spread like wildfire in the local media but Djokovic would not comment any further. Ivanovic herself posted an interesting photo on Twitter holding a tennis ball with the caption reading 'My key to a happy and successful life? Follow your passion and don’t listen to anyone who doesn’t understand you. Fire Ana'.
Many took that photo, posted on March 31st, as a hint towards her official return to tennis. Nobody is sure whether she will truly compete in the official event but nonetheless, it is very exciting news for all Ivanovic fans and tennis fans in general.
