Former world number one
Ana Ivanovic is set to make a rare on-court
appearance in the upcoming Legends Tournament. The Luxemburg Ladies Tennis Masters
will be played from 17th to 20th October this year where
eight players will participate and the winning prize money will be €110,000.
As per the latest update, Ivanovic will feature in the event.
The development was shared by the Instagram page of the competition. The Luxemburg
Open was previously a WTA 250 event but their association with the governing
body came to an end in 2022.
It will be the first time in eight years that Ivanovic will
be taking part in a notable professional competition. The 36-year-old
surprisingly retired in 2016 at the age of just 28. She finished her career
after having won one Grand Slam which was the French Open in 2008 where she
defeated Russia’s Dinara Safina in the final in straight sets with a score of
6-4, 6-3. Other than that, she also played in the final of the Australian Open
in 2008 where she lost to Russia’s Maria Sharapova in the final in straight
sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3. Ivanovic became the world number one in June
2008 but only managed to hold the top spot in the WTA rankings for 12 weeks.
