The Entry List has been confirmed for a grass court staple in the form of the Stuttgart Open (Boss Open) which is due to take place between 10-16 June, 2024 on the grass courts of Germany.
Despite only being an ATP 250, it attracts a pretty stellar line-up year-in year-out including Alexander Zverev, Hubert Hurkacz, Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton among others who are involved this time around. Former champion, Matteo Berrettini is one of the first alternates so will likely make it into the draw but this isn't 100% yet.
His form struggles and injury woes have meant that he hasn't been able to increase his ranking. But Berrettini is a true danger when it comes to grass courts so if he gets in, he will be one to watch.
Both the defending champion Frances Tiafoe and the finalist, Jan-Lennard Struff will return to the tournament for another year. The Stuttgart Open made the switch from clay to grass from 2015. It opens the extended grass-court swing the week after Roland Garros.
The first edition of the tournament was held back in 1898. Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem and Matteo Berrettini have triumphed at the tournament also known as Weissenhof due to the tennis club that it is held at. Wildcards could include further big names as for a lot it depends on their run at Roland Garros and whether they reach the latter stages.
As well as the aforementioned names, Alexander Bublik, Jack Draper and interestingly Jiri Lehecka despite his stress fracture are all involved. Draper is also interesting given the likely clamour from tournaments back in the UK prior to Wimbledon for him to play. But with more tournaments with bigger standing in Europe, he seemingly will base himself in Europe in the run-up to Wimbledon tournament wise. It all heads towards Wimbledon with Nottingham for instance also in the same week as well as Libema Open 's-Hertogenbosch taking place at a similar time.
While most tournaments are based in the UK, it forms part of a top double in particular in Germany which often courts attention with both Halle and Stuttgart leading the way. The plans of other top names including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and others is yet unknown. But Carlos Alcaraz for instance will likely start at Queen's like last year.
Whether Nadal plays on grass likely will be a late decision, while Djokovic tends not to play on the surface in the run-up to the tournament. It will also likely lead to lesser line-ups in some tournaments with the Olympic Games also being added to an already burgeoning schedule taking place post Wimbledon. This means that for a lot of players, Wimbledon might not be a priority.
