In a topsy-turvy encounter that could have gone either way, World No.9 Bianca Andreescu eventually overcame Sara Sorribes Tormo to book her spot in the semifinals of the Miami Open.
The Canadian was made to work for her 6-4 3-6 6-3 victory, with her Spanish opponent converting eight of an astounding 17 break points. This was only remedied by the fact that Andreescu converted nine of 18 break points, as both ladies seemed to have difficulty holding serve on Wednesday night.
Neither woman served particularly well, with zero aces between them and each winning approximately 50% of points on their first serve. Although Andreescu was the better player in the first set, she was unable to hold serve in the second, as she was broken in every service game. This led to Sorribes Tormo leveling the match at one set apiece, and the recent Guadalajara champion even had a 2-1 lead in the final set.
However, Andreescu finally seemed to regain her composure, breaking the World No.58 twice in the decider. After failing to serve for the match at 5-3, the 2019 US Open champion obtained another break to seal her victory after two hours and 35 minutes.
The eighth seed now faces Maria Sakkari in the semifinals, as the Greek star denied fans an Osaka/Andreescu matchup after stunning the World No.2 in their quarterfinal encounter.
