Despite being one of the most in-form players on the ATP Tour this season,
Daniil Medvedev could do little to stop
Roberto Bautista Agut on Wednesday night, as the Spaniard pulled off an incredible upset to advance to the semifinals of the
Miami Open.
Bautista Agut required just an hour and 32 minutes to complete his 6-4 6-2 victory over the top seed, and improves to 3-0 in career meetings against the current World No.2.
With the first set tied at 4-4, the Spaniard broke Medvedev and calmly served out the set. The seventh seed relied on the strategy of outlasting his Russian opponent, as his impenetrable defense forced Medvedev to go for more winners. Most of these resulted in unforced errors, as the top seed became frustrated as the game progressed.
The loss of the first set seemed to unsettle the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals champion, as he was quickly broken in the second set. Conversely, Bautista Agut grew more confident with each shot, retrieving everything sent his way. A second break saw the 32-year old attain a 5-2 lead, after which he served out the match to secure his semifinal berth.
Bautista Agut will face Jannik Sinner in an inter-generational matchup, as the 19-year old Italian defeated Alexander Bublik to advance to his first ATP Masters 1000 semifinal.
