Anna Kalinskaya has been one of the best players on the WTA Tour this season but also bad luck is around the corner often in terms of injury and she was due to play at the
DC Open over the next week but has since withdrawn.
Albeit this after Kalinskaya had been drawn to face Anastasia Potapova in the opening round this afternoon. But it is the latest spate of bad luck for the tennis power couple with Jannik Sinner, her boyfriend having to end his Paris Olympic Games dream due to tonsillitis.
Now Kalinskaya has had another injury to add to the list. She will be replaced over the next week in Washington by Taylor Townsend who has been moved into the main draw to take her place and face Anastasia Potapova.
It is a quality draw with Aryna Sabalenka, Daria Kasatkina, Ons Jabeur and Emma Raducanu all in action. All have decided to snub Olympic Games glory for ranking points and not switching surfaces again after the clay. Kalinskaya seemed to do the same after initially being invited to play as a neutral athlete.
But like her boyfriend Sinner, she will now head to Canada. After they had a highly publicised holiday to Turkey last week, it has not been a great seven days since for both with a dual blow when it comes to their latest tournaments. Albeit Sinner more so given that he was the top seed and one of the favourites in Paris to claim the gold medal and couldn't fly due to his illness.
It has not been a great month or so for Kalinskaya though on the court. Reaching a landmark Last 16 at Wimbledon, she had to retire due to injury and seemingly has not recovered as of yet after deciding to not continue against Elena Rybakina after looking good in the early going in their tie.
