Former World No.3 Sloane Stephens had reason to celebrate last weekend, as the American teamed with compatriot Ashlyn Kruger to win the doubles titles at the 2024 Charleston Open.
The American duo, who were unseeded to start the tournament, shocked the tennis community by reaching the final behind a strong effort from both ladies. The pair defeated the Ukrainian team of Lyudmyla Kichenok and Nadiia Kichenok, prevailing in a 1-6 6-3 10-7 victory in front of a rapturous home crowd.
During an interview on the Tennis Channel after their victory, both women were a bundle of laughs as fielded several questions. The title win was their first together as a team, and it prompted the host to question whether they would be working together going forward with qualification for the year-ending WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia as a goal.
"Oh wait, are we we in the race?" asked Stephens.
"Y'all are getting there," replied the host. "You are 15 right now. 13, I'm being told, moving up by the second."
"What!! Are we going to Saudi Arabia?" exclaimed Stephens, which drew laughter from Kruger and the host. Stephens would later confirm that the duo would be playing together at the upcoming Madrid Open.
