Top seed
Aryna Sabalenka is through to another round at the National Bank Open in Montreal with a win over Rebbeca Marino. 6-1 6-3.
The story of Rebecca Marino is a fascinating one with the Canadian making a comeback in 2021 that had everybody buzzing. However, the Cinderella story ended today against top seed Aryna Sabalenka who halted the Canadian comfortably. Sabalenka found herself in a new situation being the top seed a huge event but so far she has played like one.
As good as Marino played on home soil the Canadian simply did not have enough today. The Belarussian came out furious in the first set dominating rallies with the sheer force in her tennis that she posses. Marino did not how to handle it and quickly lost the set 1-6.
The Canadian somewhat adapted in the 2nd set and played generally better. Sabalenka pulled back the aggression as well which contributed to a much more closely contested affair in the 2nd set. It was actually Marino who had the first break point but after not converting it she lost confidence.
Two games after that she faltered enough for Sabalenka to take the break and lead which converted to a 6-3 2nd set win. A good showing from Sabalenka who looks strong in Montreal and moves on to the next round.
