Ashleigh Barty is through to the 2nd round of Wimbledon after defeating Carla Suarez Navarro in her last ever Wimbledon match 6-1 6-7(1) 6-1.
Unlike Roland Garros where Carla Suarez Navarro played her final match in front of no crowd, she said goodbye to Wimbledon on the Centre Court against Ashleigh Bart. The Australian jumped out to an early lead in this one against Suarez Navarro who was shaky.
Barty controlled the tempo well serving extremely well while attacking Suarez Navarro. The Spaniard did not handle it well and committed 7 errors to 2 winners. She played much better in the 2nd set once she settled in but Barty did not play well in the 2nd set.
The Australian oftentimes got baited in rallies to go for the winner with her sights being completely off. Barty would however get a chance to close it out at 5-4 but Suarez Navarro was able to break back and take a 6-5 lead. Barty forced the tiebreak with a quick service game but lost it 1-7.
Barty composed herself in time and rushed out to a quick 5-0 lead after which she closed it out with 6-1. A very impressive rally in the 3rd set by Barty after a shocking 2nd set collapse where she had 26 unforced errors to only 13 winners.
