Destanee Aiava shone bright again at the 2025 Australian Open winning in three sets battling through the opening round outlasting Greet Minnen in three hours but it was the dress which dazzled the most in a nod to Caroline Wozniacki.
Aiava has captivated fans by reviving iconic tennis dresses from the past which have been bought on eBay including the Wozniacki one. In the qualifying rounds, Aiava paid homage to Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova. In her first round, she took to the court in an Adidas color block dress worn by Wozniacki at the 2013 US Open.
This was a Stella McCartney creation that harks back to that era but also shows the stark nature of people who don't have a sponsorship as she has had to resort to having to buy pieces off social media and eBay to make up her wardrobe.
"I found one on Facebook yesterday before my match," said Aiava. "I might go pick that up. It's only $35, which is a steal."I am hoping to get a sponsor. I'll probably have to put up with wearing the same thing as other people. But for now I'm loving picking whatever I want to wear and buying whatever I want."
While it means she can actually afford to travel to tournaments after winning her first round. “It means that I can bring someone to travel with this year, and I can afford to actually go to all the tournaments that I want to,” Aiava said on the money earned from the first round.
“It really helps. Financially, tennis is so expensive. I struggle traveling on my own. The fact that I get to bring my fiancé [ATP pro Corey Gaal] with me and hopefully one of my family members to the big ones, yeah, it makes a world of a difference.”
Destanee Aiava has been wearing a different iconic dress from the 2010s this week in Melbourne.
