Retired Australian player Jelena Dokic has heaped praise on compatriot Ashleigh Barty, labeling the World No.1's journey to the top of the WTA circuit as 'inspirational'.
Barty is scheduled to face American Danielle Collins in the final on Saturday evening, with the Queensland native becoming the first Australian woman to reach the women's singles final in 42 years.
Dokic, a former World No.4, talked up Barty's legacy in her homeland and stressed the importance of how much it meant to the people Down Under.
“Ash Barty is definitely one of those inspirational women, not just because of what she has done on the court and how successful she has been, but off the court as well,” said Dokic in an interview with Eurosport.
“What she stands for, she is inspiring. She is a role model to so many kids who look up to her. She is so proud of her heritage as well.”
Barty is yet to drop a set during the tournament, and will undoubtedly be the favorite when she faces Collins in front of her home crowd on Rod Laver Arena.
