Victoria Azarenka and Maria Sakkari are through to the Ostrava Open semifinal following victories on Friday.
The first two matches at the Ostrava Open today were fascinating matches that saw Maria Sakkari and Victoria Azarenka advance to the next round. The method of victory was a bit different but both got the job done. Sakkari didn't start off well in her match. The 100-minute match saw Ons Jabeur strike first with her winning the opening set 6-3. She would continue to play well in the 2nd set taking an early 3-1 lead. That is when things turned upside down for Jabeur who would win only one game in the remainder of the match. Sakkari went on a tear that saw her first win the 2nd set with 6-3 and then with the final set with 6-1. A marvellous turnaround from the Greek who played well at this event so the early struggles were odd.
Joining her in the semifinal will be Victoria Azarenka who finally strung together a few good matches. Today she required 92 minutes to defeat Mertens who went down easier than one might have thought. She started off well breaking Azarenka early and taking a lead. She would hold it until 4-2 when Azarenka strung together a 4 game run to win the opening set 6-4. It was a huge blow for Mertens whose confidence completely evaporated in the 2nd set.
She served well hitting her 1st serve at a good rate but Azarenka completely dominated her in the rallies. The 2nd serve was especially damning for Elise who won only one of 5 points on it. Ultimately Victoria outplayed her in key rallies which crushed the Belgians confidence.

- I love WTA matches. Seek them out as much as possible on youtube and other platforms I already subscribe to. With that in mind, I do not wish to pay $$$ to a notoriously slippery subscription conglomerate sports broadcaster (like SkySports) just for the privilege to watch it and the tnt/eurosport/discovery subscription went from $$ to $$$+ annually in a blink of an eye. With ATP I have been begrudgingly paying xyz tennis only channel and try to catch up on slams elsewhere (pubs, youtube with USO later on games are just as enjoyable to watch and a smart move to upload on their official channel) but they don't cover WTA. I tried another Tennis dedicated channel that advertised originally as broadcasting where I live, but turned out, they took the money, but didn't cover the matches (only fluff/filler value documentaries). I don't understand why it is so hard to not lock the live matches to one broadcaster only refusing so many people who are happy to pay for the privilege just not through that one entry point. WTA is so exciting for the last few years and they really should capitalise on it as much as possible. And I know it is somewhat naive talking without knowing the inner works, but not being able to find any WTA other than youtube (and then only highlights mostly) is just so frustrating.JayJay11-09-2026
