Victoria Azarenka dug deep into her bag of tricks on Friday night, prevailing in a marathon slugfest against
Jelena Ostapenko to reach the final of the BNP Paribas Open
Indian Wells tournament.
The two-time champion rallied from a set down to pull off the 3-6 6-3 7-5 victory, relying on her poise under pressure to close out the match after multiple breaks in the final set. Both ladies left it all on the court, with each displaying outstanding court coverage and superb shot-making.
Although each competitor was hindered by double faults, it was Azarenka who held serve when it mattered the most. The Belarusian obtained the crucial break to lead 6-5 in the final set, and served her way out of trouble when facing two break points. After two hours and 20 minutes of grueling play, the World No.32 secured her spot in the final as Ostapenko's shot sailed long.
Having already lifted the title twice, Azarenka will be competing for an unprecedented third title at Indian Wells. The former World No.1 will face the winner between an in-form Ons Jabeur and a talented Paula Badosa, as both ladies battle it out for a spot in the final.
