Paula Badosa resisted a strong comeback from
Marta Kostyuk on Friday at the
Australian Open, overcoming the Ukrainian to reach the fourth round.
Badosa was forced to work hard in her 6-2 5-7 6-4 victory, dispatching of the World No.66 in two hours and 19 minutes. The Spaniard cruised through the first round in barely half an hour, but was taken the distance by Kostyuk, who rallied to level the match and force a decider. The final set saw both ladies trade breaks at 1-1, before Badosa secured the crucial break in the seventh game. The eighth seed would go on to serve out the match, securing a fourth round date with the winner between Madison Keys and Qiang Wang.
In a battle between Roland Garros champions, current titleholder
Barbora Krejcikova rallied from a set down to defeat
Jelena Ostapenko in a 2-6 6-4 6-4 slugfest. The fourth seed overcame a sluggish start, as Ostapenko dictated play and capitalized on her opponent's errors to claim the opening set.
Nonetheless, the Czech No.1 found her footing and took control of the match, breaking her opponent and saving five break points to ensure her two hour and 10 minute victory. Krejcikova will face two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka in the fourth round.
