No tennis has been played today yet already a title has been handed out. The world number 484 Robin Montgomery has won the
Libema Open s-Hertogenbosch after Barbora Krejcikova was forced to withdraw due to illness.
The injury problems continue for the two-time Grand Slam champion who has seen a sharp plummet in the rankings. She looked to find some form back on grass and did so in the Netherlands. Following a disappointing first round exit at Roland Garros, she showed her class by not dropping a set enroute to the final.
She disposed of Renata Zarazua, Hanne Vandewinkel, Elena-Gabriela Ruse and Magda Linette in dominant showings. The Czech was the only seed left from the quarter-final stages onwards with many falling to disappointing and surprising exits in a very wide open tournament.
Krejcikova seemed to capitalise off this and stormed to the final, but she will not be able to play in it due to an upper respiratory infection. Not an injury this time, but still a frustrating way to end what was a very promising week.
"I'm sorry to announce that I have to withdraw from today's Libema Open final due to illness," a statement read. "I have been felling unwell and after consulting with the medical team it has become clear that I am not in a condition to compete today. I was really looking forward to the opportunity to play in the final and compete for a title, but today it's not possible.
"I would like to thank the tournament organisers, volunteers, sponsors and the incredible fans in s-Hertogenbosch for their support throughout the week. I have enjoyed my time at the Libema Open and am grateful for the warm welcome I have received.
"I would also like to congratulate Robin for a great week here and wish her the very best for the rest of the season. I am disappointed to end my tournament in this way, but I will focus on recovering as quickly as possible and look forward to returning to competition soon."
Montgomery rises almost 300 places after maiden WTA title
For Montgomery, this is massive. The qualifier took down the likes of Daria Kasatkina and Ajla Tomljanovic on the way to the final. The 21-year-old had reached a career high of 95 in the world this time last year but was plummeting down the order due to a wrist injury and nine-month absence in the sport.
A former junior US Open champion, there was a lot of hype surrounding the American, and for good reason with it now being proved on grass. She rises a staggering 291 places as she now sits at world number 193.
There is still a lot of work to do to get back up the rankings, but this
breakthrough title will most certainly give her the confidence to push on.
