Ashleigh Barty played her first match since the US Open and she was brilliant pairing up with Sanders to take down Gauff and McNally 6-0 7-6(4).
Gauff and McNally are a very good doubles pairing that can play some brilliant tennis at times yet they were no match for the Australian combination. Barty, a strong doubles player in her own right, was brilliant in this match that lasted a little over an hour. It was her first match since the US Open and there was hardly any rust visible in her level.
The start of the match featured a strong showing from the Australians as they racked up games rather quickly. In the end, it only took them 18 minutes to serve a bagel to their opponents and win the first set 6-0. After that, the Americans consolidated quite a bit but played much much better. They were serving better and that allowed them to win their games easier.
The Australians never an into any problems either and after failing to convert a break point at 4-4 they finally found a breakthrough at 5-5. Taking a 6-5 lead they had a chance to close it out but the Americans pulled it back to send it into a tiebreak. A very good tiebreak followed with Barty and Sanders being on top early.
They then closed it out with 7-6(4).
