The
WTA Elite Trophy final has been won by
Beatriz Haddad Maia with the Brazilian denying Qinwen Zheng 7-6, 7-6.
Haddad Maia came into the WTA Elite Trophy under some turmoil with injuries at unfortunate parts of the season and even a freak accident in Guadalajara where the shower door exploded on her.
This led to a myriad of cuts on her hands and she could hardly win a game in the intervening months. But after qualifying for the WTA Elite Trophy, she managed to find the form which saw her propelled to being a top 10 player.
Defeating Qinwen Zheng in the final who herself was in exceptional form winning in Zhengzhou and the Asian Games in recent weeks. But she couldn’t stop Haddad Maia.
In just under three hours, it was the matter of two tiebreaks with a break a piece in the first and in the second, she went 3-1 up before being hit back but never relinquished the lead.
After going 2-0 down in the deciding tiebreak, she won five straight points en route to sealing the match.
