Belinda Bencic battles past Leylah Fernandez in the first round of the Guadalajara Open and she was quite happy after the win.
The match was hugely important for Bencic who is hoping for a late push this week in Mexico for the WTA Finals. She needs to reach the quarter-finals at least to stand a chance and this was a good start against a tricky player:
"I think every match with Leylah will be, and is, very close. She's playing very good and it's tough to find the rhythm against her. I'm happy I learned something from the last time I lost."
The conditions were quite tricky as the temperatures dropped during the night and that is something Bencic mentioned as well after the match:
"I felt like I had a good game plan but it was tough to execute it with the conditions. I'm happy for the first match that I'm through. It doesn't have to be pretty."
This was also the first match she played after starting to work with Dmitry Tursunov.
