Bianca Andreescu completed a dream week at the Catalonia Challenger, after securing the doubles title alongside Indonesian Aldila Sutjialdi. Following an early exit at the Madrid Open, the current world No. 121 decided to enter a new tournament, where she claimed her first doubles title since 2018.
Andreescu has had a difficult past year, after beginning a long break from her career following her elimination at the Tokyo Open in October 2024. It took her six months to return to the courts at the Rouen Open, where she fell in the debut against Suzan Lamens (1-6, 6-4, 6-7).
The former US Open champion achieved her first win of 2025 a week ago at the Madrid Open but fell in the second round against Elena Rybakina (10th seed). Seeking to gain match rhythm on the clay courts, she traveled quickly to Catalonia, where she lost in the first round of the singles to Kimberly Birrell (4th seed).
However, Andreescu entered the doubles draw thanks to a wildcard alongside doubles world No. 42 Aldila Sutjiadi. They defeated Tereza Mihalikova and Olivia Nicholls in their debut, and then surprisingly beat the first seeds Anna Danilina and Irina Khromacheva to reach the final.
This Friday, they were crowned champions after defeating the pair of Leylah Fernandez and Lulu Sun 6-2, 6-4. The next challenge for the Canadian will be at the Rome Open, which she entered using her protected ranking.
