Bianca Andreescu earned a huge comeback win over
Victoria Azarenka 2-6 6-3 6-4 getting her
Roland Garros campaign underway on a high note.
Andreescu hasn't played that well recently after coming back from an ankle injury that she sustained in Miami. The Canadian did earn a pretty big win over Azarenka at the start of Roland Garros coming back from a set down. That fact is even more important than the win because Andreescu proved herself that all the hard work is paying off.
She's been very motivated ever since returning from her mental healthy break but she hasn't had that much luck with injuries to be fair. This one saw her overcome a really erratic effort in the opening set where she had 11 winners but also 7 errors which ultimately proved costly. Azarenka simply played the more crucial rallies better.
Comeback masterclass
Despite that Andreescu never gave up on the match even after she fell behind 1-3 in the second set. She kept trusting herself and playing her game ultimately finding a really good rhythm and winning five games in a row to take the second set. It was a masterclass by the Canadian as she had 17 winners and fewer errors than Azarenka.
The final set was a spectacular set of tennis because both players played really well. It was the best both played all mathc long and it was a delight to see. Quite competitive too as Andreescu took an early lead and then held it despite heavy pressure from Azarenka. The Canadian saved four break points in that 3rd set and converted only her 5th match point in the match.
She had an incredible 47 winners in the match, 14 winners more than Azarenka and two errors fewer. She also served really well so just a great comeback.
