Bianca Andreescu’s encouraging week at the WTA 125 event in Austin ended just short of the title as the Canadian fell 6–3, 3–6, 6–3 to Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee in Saturday’s final. Despite the defeat, the result represents a positive step for the former US Open champion as she continues her gradual return to form after several seasons disrupted by injuries.
Andreescu, currently ranked world No. 165, has spent much of the 2026 season competing in smaller tournaments to rebuild both ranking points and match rhythm. The WTA 125 category represents the lowest level of tour events but often provides opportunities for players seeking consistent competition.
The Canadian’s run to the final is expected to lift her ranking to around No. 146 next week. While still far from the level that once saw her inside the top five, the improvement reflects steady progress for a player working to regain a stable position on the WTA Tour.
Andreescu’s schedule remains busy. After receiving a wild card into the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last week—where she lost in the opening round—the 25-year-old is set to compete in Miami Open qualifying on Sunday.

Tararudee caps breakthrough run with title

Lanlana Tararudee arrived in Austin as a qualifier ranked world No. 124 but gradually emerged as one of the surprises of the week. The Thai player defeated Dalma Galfi, Caty McNally and Anastasia Zakharova before overcoming Kimberly Birrell to reach the championship match.
In the final, Tararudee proved slightly more efficient in the key moments. She produced five aces compared with Andreescu’s three and saved nine of the 13 break points she faced. Both players won 56 percent of their service points, but Tararudee converted five of 11 break opportunities to maintain the advantage.
The match itself swung in momentum across the three sets. Tararudee controlled the opening set with consistent pressure on Andreescu’s second serve, while the Canadian responded strongly in the second set by improving her first-serve percentage and dictating rallies from the baseline.
In the deciding set, Tararudee secured an early break and managed the lead effectively, ultimately winning 71 percent of her service games across the match. Her ability to hold serve under pressure proved decisive as she closed out the title in three sets.

Signs of progress for Andreescu

Although the final ended in defeat, Andreescu produced one of her most consistent weeks of the season. She defeated Solana Sierra, Renata Zarazua, Emerson Jones and Paula Badosa to reach the championship match. Her semifinal victory over Badosa was particularly notable, with Andreescu recovering after losing the second set to secure a 6–2, 3–6, 6–3 win.
The result demonstrated the resilience that defined her breakthrough season in 2019. That year remains the benchmark of Andreescu’s career. She climbed to world No. 4 after capturing the US Open title along with two additional tournaments during a remarkable campaign.
Since then, injuries and interruptions have limited her consistency on tour. The Austin run, however, offered encouraging signs that the Canadian is rebuilding her competitive rhythm as she continues the climb back up the rankings.
