Bianca Andreescu has only just returned to the sport after nearly a year out with a stress fracture in her back and it seems like her bad injury luck has continued. Facing off against
Donna Vekic at the
Olympic Games, she was defeated in straight sets.
Andreescu at one point to start the second set was consoled on the floor by Vekic who sat alongside her on the clay as she was in tears after a fall. She had a medical timeout and was sat crying on the bench.
The issue seemed to be her left hand with it being perceived that she hit her hand with the racquet after she swung it. While she didn't retire, she looked to be in real distress as she was defeated by Vekic.
Even her father moved closer to the front of the stand in case Andreescu had to retire with injury. A player who has been overjoyed with having her first ever Olympic Games experience. But it is one that ended in a bit of a nightmare.
She will hope that it is not serious with the Canadian Open just over a week away where Andreescu will be a home hope. But while Vekic moves on to face Gauff, Andreescu will think what could've been.
If Vekic beats Gauff, it could yet be her close friend Maria Sakkari who has been on a real tear so far this tournament in the Quarter-Finals. The former continues her supreme form from Wimbledon earlier this Summer.
