Angelique Kerber is into the Last 16 in her final ever tournament, the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. She is receiving the reception that is befitting of her final tournament too.
Kerber sat at the change of ends as she defeated Jaqueline Cristian 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 after a supreme win over Naomi Osaka 7-5, 6-3 in the previous round and soaked it in.
The crowd which included a lot of German support were chanting Angie Kerber vociferously in a spine tingling moment. This too after she had come back to win the second set after losing to first to the Romanian.
She went on to win the match from there so perhaps it was the boost that she needed. But certainly if she is bowing out, it is one way to do so as she has the backing of her fans who have come to cheer her on one last time.
She also received a standing ovation from the crowd after she sealed the win as she looked emotional and delighted to win through. Next up is Leylah Fernandez. A player in very good form and one that will no doubt pose the biggest test yet.
But similar to Danielle Collins who will retire at the end of this season no mind the end of the tournament, it is very much a player having freedom in what will be her last ever competitive competition. Kerber only returned seven months ago but has not shown this level thus far.
Only when she announced that her comeback was to be shortened only a few months in has it seen the best of the former World No.1 and what a sight it is too. Ironically also it boxes off some good Roland Garros memories, the only tournament in her illustrious career that she hasn't won. Can she end it off with a medal for all of the near misses in Paris?
