Women’s tennis witnessed the longest match on the tour
during the Thailand Open. The ongoing WTA 250 event is moving towards the
business end where the remaining players are giving their all to secure the
ultimate prize.
In the second round of the competition, Germany’s Laura
Siegemund defeated Wang Xiyu of China in straight sets with a score of 7-6,
4-6, 7-6. That match ended up as the longest game in women’s tennis this season, as it lasted four hours and nine minutes. Not only that, but it was the longest game
in women’s tennis in the last 13 years.
During the contest, the winning player ended up won 65
percent points on the first serve. She won two tiebreaks on the day. Other
than that, Siegemund ended up converting five break points. She registered a
thumping win in the first round against America’s Alycia Parks in straight sets
with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Siegemund will be hoping to finally book her spot in the last-four
for the first time this season. Before this competition, she played in the quarterfinal of a WTA event on two occasions earlier this year, but on both occasions, she finished as the second-best. In a WTA event in Adelaide at the beginning of
the year, Siegemund was forced to withdraw from the competition just before the
start of the quarterfinal clash against Russia’s Daria Kasatkina. She later
played in the last-eight clash of the Morocco Open, where she lost to Bulgaria’s
Viktoriya Tomova in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
Siegemund is now set to face Spain’s Rebeka Masarova, who
booked her spot in the last-eight after beating China’s Xinyu Wang in the round
of 16 with a score of 7-6, 3-6, 7-5. It will be the first time ever that both players will face off in professional tennis.
