Amanda Anisimova continues her impeccable form and returns to a WTA 1000 final after defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-3 at the Qatar Open. Just six months ago, the American reached her first WTA 1000 final at the Canadian Open but fell to compatriot Jessica Pegula in a hard-fought three-set battle.
The 23-year-old came into the match in inspired form, having taken down opponents such as Paula Badosa (9th seed), Leylah Fernandez, and Marta Kostyuk. Against Russia’s Alexandrova, she showcased some of her best tennis and cruised to victory without major troubles.
Anisimova came out firing in the first set, securing back-to-back breaks to surge ahead 4-0 in just over 15 minutes. Both players had similar serving stats, with a 71% first-serve success rate, but Anisimova won 58% of those points compared to Alexandrova’s 56%.
Despite the seemingly one-sided scoreline, the set was more competitive than it appeared. Alexandrova managed to recover one of the breaks and closed the gap to 3-4, but Anisimova remained composed. She sealed the set with another break to take it 6-3.
The second set began on a more even footing, with Alexandrova coming closer to seizing the lead. In the third game—the longest of the match—Anisimova fended off five break points before immediately capitalizing on her second break opportunity to go up 3-1. From there, both players held serve, and the American closed out the match 6-3, 6-3.
With this victory, a new WTA 1000 champion will be crowned this Saturday when Anisimova takes on Jelena Ostapenko in the final. The former French Open champion caused a major upset earlier in the day, eliminating three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek to secure her place in the title match.
