Wimbledon's newly-crowned champion
Marketa Vondrousova lifted the
title without wearing a branded kit.
The 24-year-old surprised everyone by beating Tunisia’s Ons
Jabeur in the final of the third Grand Slam of the year on Saturday in straight
sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4 in London.
In the ceremony after the final, it was clear that Vondrousova
lifted the title without wearing a branded kit, something which is not considered
a normal thing.
The Sokolov-born earlier had a Nike branded kit but the
brand dumped her after four years during her struggles with fitness issues.
It was confirmed by Vondrousova after the semifinal victory
at Wimbledon where she stated: "Yeah, the contract finished last year. Yeah, it
was after four years, so they decided to stop."
However, after securing her maiden Grand Slam triumph, she
will be hoping to hear from the Nike management soon for another contract.
During her unbelievable run in London, Vondrousova won five
out of the seven matches in straight sets, including the semi-final against
Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina and the final against Jabeur.
The victory was an even more special one considering that
before this year, Vondrousova’s best outing in the competition was in 2021
where she was knocked out from the second round after suffering a defeat
against Britain’s Emma Raducanu in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
