Spain’s
Carlos Alcaraz is in the news for all the right
reasons, especially after his triumph at
Wimbledon 2023.
The 20-year-old defeated Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in the
final of the third Grand Slam of the year with a score of 1–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–1,
3–6, 6–4 on Sunday to clinch his second Grand Slam title.
After the match, Alcaraz, while giving an interview to
American broadcaster CNN, dropped the trophy live on air. However, that did not
harm the accolade, much to the delight of the current world number one.
Alcaraz’s triumph at Wimbledon was a special one as before
this year, his best outing in the competition was his appearance in the fourth
round in 2022.
His victory also halted Djokovic’s unbelievable 34-match
winning streak in the competition during which he ended up winning four
back-to-back titles.
The 36-year-old’s last defeat before Sunday came during the
2017 edition where he was forced to retire from the quarterfinals with an arm
injury.
The defeat also stopped Djokovic’s march towards equaling
former world number one Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles.
As of now, the Serbian tennis star remains the second-most
successful player in the history of the competition along with America’s Pete
Sampras with seven titles to his name.
