Former world number 6
Carla Suarez Navarro is heading to Paris to make her return to tennis after recovering from cancer.
The Spaniard confirmed earlier that she would make her return at the
Roland Garros after successfully recovering from cancer. The Grand Slam stars on Sunday and it will mark a happy milestone for Suarez Navarro who announced her recovery not long ago. Her diagnosis came last year in September after which she underwent therapy which was a success.
The 32 year old was excited to announce her return to tennis. She said:
“It makes me tremendously excited to be able to participate in Roland Garros.I have been working these last few months to give myself the opportunity to compete one last time in Paris. I am looking forward to jumping onto the court and feeling again how special this tournament has always been for me.”
The return will kickstart what will be her final campaign on the tour as she announced back in 2019 that she would call it quits in 2020. The diagnosis and pandemic spoiled those plans so she pushed the retirement back to 2021. On the retirement plans and the
French Open in general she said:
“Tennis has given me many things and I have always wanted to say goodbye on a court. Roland Garros has given me some of the best moments of my career. My first great result was produced on these courts, I have very good memories after all these years and it is a joy to be able to come for the last time to compete in Paris."
