Caroline Garcia had to dig deep in order to beat Xiyu Wang at Roland Garros as it took her three sets and almost three hours of play to get it done 7-6(4) 4-6 6-4.
The French player had a really impressive season last year but her level this year hasn't been that good so far. She did start well in this one taking an early lead of 2-0 but gave it right back as Wang made it 2-2. After that, we mostly saw the players trade games as neither was able to make a breakthrough.
We arrived in the tiebreak with Garcia eventually outplaying her Chinese opponent to take it 7-4. The second set saw Wang play a really flawless set as she didn't allow a single break point. She took an early lead 3-1 and then held it for the rest of the set getting it done 6-4 in the end. The final one was a very exciting one.
Both players had break points early but neither were able to get it done and we only saw a break in the final game of the match. Garcia was up 5-4, she created break point chances and Wang caved under the pressure. A pretty well-played match by both however the native player moves on to the next round.
