World No.5
Caroline Garcia faced little difficulty in her round of 16 encounter against Nuria Parrizas Diaz on Thursday night, cruising through to the quarterfinals of the
Abierto GNP Seguros.
The top seed recorded an easy 6-3 6-2 win over her Spanish opponent, relying on her power to frustrate Parrizas Diaz. Garcia hit five aces in the first set, accompanied by some precise groundstrokes from the baseline as she raced through the opener.
Garcia was just as impressive in the second set, winning 12 of 14 points behind her first serve. Furthermore, the former World No.4 did not face a break point in the second set, but attacked Parrizas Diaz's weaker second serve to obtain and capitalize on two break opportunities. This was enough for Garcia to close out the match, ending proceedings after just an hour and 2 minutes.
Awaiting Garcia in the quarterfinal is seventh seed Mayar Sherif, who fought past China's Xinyu Wang in three sets earlier in the day.
