Aryna Sabalenka's great level and dominance are no longer a surprise. Over the past year, she managed to leave behind
Iga Swiatek's dominance of recent seasons and not only surpassed her as world No. 1 but also built a significant lead that widens as the weeks go by.
The 3-time Grand Slam champion is just one win away from reaching 11,000 points in the WTA Ranking, something that under the current system has only been achieved by two players before her:
Serena Williams and Iga Swiatek. In the last 52 weeks, Sabalenka won the US Open, three WTA 1000 titles, and the WTA 500 Brisbane. She also reached the final of the Australian Open and five other finals – four of them in WTA 1000 tournaments.
The current world No. 1 has 10,768 points and a victory in Madrid – where she will face Coco Gauff – would take her to 11,118, placing her in the top-3 of players who have reached the most points.
The current record is held by Serena Williams in 2013, who reached 13,615 points with three Grand Slam titles in the previous 52 weeks. Almost 2,000 points behind is Iga Swiatek's record with 11,695 points, with five WTA 1000 titles and one Grand Slam considering the previous 52 weeks.
Furthermore, Sabalenka does not defend too many points in the coming months, at least until after Wimbledon. In 2024, she fell in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros and could not compete at Wimbledon. If the Belarusian maintains good consistency – as she has accustomed us to in the last year – she could surpass Swiatek without too much trouble, although it is still too early to say for sure.
The world No. 1 will face Coco Gauff in the final this Saturday, seeking her third title at the
Madrid Open. Currently, the head-to-head record favors the American 5-4, and their only previous final was at the 2023 US Open, where Gauff claimed her first and only Grand Slam title so far.
