Former world number one
Chris Evert has been lambasted by the
fans on social media for her commentary in the final of
Wimbledon 2024. The
third Grand Slam of the year ended on Sunday with Spain’s young tennis star Carlos
Alcaraz lifting the men’s singles title after beating Serbia’s Novak Djokovic
in straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.
On Saturday, in the women’s singles category, it was Barbora
Krejcikova who came on top against Italy’s
Jasmine Paolini and lifted the title
after winning the contest with a score of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. During the match,
Evert made a mistake by calling Paolini ‘Paolina’ at least three times which
left the fans frustrated as they lambasted the former world number one in
different posts on the social media platform X — previously known as Twitter.
"Chris Evert has said Paolina 3 times and I just turned
the match on. Is Paolina in the final right now?" wrote one fan. "Chris
Evert is as insufferable in the booth as she was on the court. On mute,"
another one wrote. "SOMEONE TELL CHRIS EVERT that the woman's name is
Paolini. Not Paolina," one fan stated. The defeat was the second consecutive loss in the final of a
Grand Slam for Paolini as she also suffered defeat in the final of the French
Open earlier.
She was up against Poland’s Iga Swiatek who came out on top in
straight sets with a score of 6-2, 6-1. On the other hand, the victory for Krejcikova
was her second Grand Slam in her career and the first since the French Open in
2021. Back then, the 28-year-old defeated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final
with a score of 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. To go with her achievements in the singles
category, Krejcikova also has a brilliant record while playing in the doubles
category where she has won seven Grand Slam titles.
