Barbora Krejcikova made sure it was back-to-back Czech winners at Wimbledon by downing Jasmine Paolini in the final on Saturday afternoon. She sealed it 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 and the 31st seed adds a second Grand Slam title in singles.
She also joins a select group to have won both singles and doubles at Wimbledon after defeating the Italian who loses out in back-to-back Grand Slam finals. It is an unlikely triumph for Krejcikova who has dealt with health issues and injuries a plenty when she just gets herself into a bit of form.
“I think nobody really believes it. Nobody believes that I got to the final. And nobody’s gonna believe that I won Wimbledon," said Krejcikova.
"I don’t have any words right now. It’s just unbelievable what just happened. It’s definitely the best day of my tennis career and the best day of my life.”
“It’s super difficult to explain what I’m feeling right now. I would like to congratulate Jasmine and her team. She had a great two weeks. It was a great final. We were Just fighting m for every single ball. At the end I was the lucky one. On the other hand, she played the Roland Garros final just a few weeks ago. It’s amazing what she was able to achieve in such a short period. Big congratulations.”
She also follows in the footsteps of her mentor, the late great Jana Novotna who also won the title and she detailed what it meant to her to follow in her footsteps. “Coming to Jana, knocking on her door, giving her the letter.. everything that happened during that moment just changed my life. It definitely changed my tennis life. During the period when I finished juniors I didn’t know what I should do. I didn’t know if I should play pro or go the way of education. Jana was the one who told me I had the potential and that I should definitely turn pro and try to make it. Before she passed away she told me to go and win a slam. I achieved it already in Paris in 2021. It was an unbelievable moment for me. I never dreamed I’d win the same trophy as Jana did in 1998..”
