America’s young tennis star
Coco Gauff has achieved yet
another milestone after her recent success in the
Australian Open.
The 19-year-old is often regarded as one of the most highly-rated
players currently playing in the women’s singles category. She lived up to the
hype last year when clinched her maiden Grand Slam title.
Gauff defeated the current world number two Belarus’ Aryna
Sabalenka in the final of the US Open in 2023 with a score of 2–6, 6–3, 6–2 to
lift the title. The current world number three continued her good run in the
first Grand Slam of the year where she booked her place in the fourth round
after beating fellow American Alycia Parks in the round of 32 in straight sets with
a score of 6-0, 6-2.
With that win, Gauff joined the elite list of women’s players
who registered 10 straight wins at major events in the 21st century despite
being a teenager. Before her, only three players managed to achieve the feat
including the likes of the current world number one Poland’s Iga Swiatek,
former world number one Russia’s Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Guaff will now face
world number 69 Poland’s Magdalena Frech in the round of 16 clash of the mega-event
on Saturday.
