Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula won the National Bank Open Toronto trophy by beating Melichar and Perez 6-4 6-7(5) 10-5 in the final.
Not many people expected Coco Gauff to become world number one in doubles before she did in singles but that's exactly what has happened tonight. Gauff and Pegula have been playing together for a while because Gauff's usual doubles partner Caty McNally is not able to play it too often due to her ranking. The pairing with Pegula proved fruitful as they played a couple of strong events winning the trophy here as well.
With the trophy, Guaff will move up six spots in the doubles ranking and become the new doubles number one ahead of Shuai Zhang who is 2nd. Jessica Pegula will move from number 12 to inside the top 10 which is a new career-high ranking.
Both of them are in stellar form leading up to the US Open and they will certainly look to win that this year. Gauff played in the final last year with McNally and lost that one. She played with Pegula in the French Open final and lost that one again. Perhaps it's time to confirm that number one ranking with a trophy at the US Open.
